Reminiscing

The full-service talent agency where I worked in the late 90s was what they refer to in The Business as a “boutique agency” — small & specialized. We only represented stand-ups when I first arrived although we quickly expanded to handle sketch comics — and one lanky, humorous contortionist/mime (who booked more jobs than anyone else on the roster) — as well.

The guy who co-founded & co-owned the agency covered half hours (sitcoms) and stand-up specials, and we had another guy who only booked personal appearances; I was responsible for commercials, films & one hours (dramas). I mentioned before we only represented comics, right? Since they’re generally not known for their strong dramatic chops & most of them felt commercials were way beneath them I totally would have starved if I’d been on commission.

Also: stand-ups are just as whiny as actors, but at least they’re funny while they’re doing it.

As a former commercial agent, I wonder. How do you spin that phone call?

“You’ll be in a band, so that’s cool, right?”

Thanks. I think it got better as the morning went on. I hadn’t done much talking for 3 days, I was rusty. :)
